Co-op harnesses hydropower for Derbyshire store
Having just opened the UK’s first micro-hydropowered store, the Co-operative group seems to be leading the way in retail energy efficiency.
The micro-hydro installation, in a Derbyshire store, is powered by the fast flowing waters of the nearby river Goyt. It’s expected to produce enough green electricity to provide over 50% of the store’s needs.
The group has also been sticking to its co-operative principles by involving local people in the project. Indeed, this is the first micro-hydro installation in the UK to be owned and funded by local residents. It’s hoped that the model will be adopted across the country.
The Co-op group says that it has reduced its electricity usage by 12.5% in the last two years, saving over ?
