Have a very merry green Christmas — send e-cards
It’s not quite what Bing Crosby was dreaming of, but Edinburgh Council has urged residents to have a green Christmas this year.
The council hopes to greenify the festive season by encouraging people to send e-cards, and buy recycled gifts.
According to this press release, Bradford & Bingley is jumping on the bandwagon too. It says that an estimated 22,000 tonnes of Christmas cards will be dumped this festive season. Of course, many of them are likely to get recycled, but that’s still a lot of landfill for a friendly festive gesture.
Bradford & Bingley is among the corporations that have signed up to be a part of the Crisis Christmas Card Challenge, an initiative that aims to help the corporate sector to go green, whilst helping the homeless people’s charity.
It isn’t just businesses that can cut down on cards, though. You can’t stand an e-card up on your mantelpiece, but sending one is a way that anyone can spread Christmas cheer, without creating a new year’s cardboard mountain.
We’ve been scouring the net for the best ones about – some are free, some are not-so-free, but it’s all for a good cause.
E-CARDS for free
-Friends of the Earth
-Diabetes UK
-NCH, the children’s charity
-Shelter
E-CARDS for money
-Marie Curie
-Charity e-cards – choose what charity you want to donate to, and then take your pick from a nice gallery of designs.
-No cards thanks – the same concept as charity e-cards, with different charities (and cards!) to choose from.
Of course, it’s still nice to have a real card, and if you are sending them make sure you do so before Royal Mail’s last posting dates.
If you end up receiving plenty, you needn’t just sling them into the recycling come the twelfth night. Cutting the front off each lets you use it as a name tag for next year’s presents – just be sure to check first for any stray sweet nothings that you wouldn’t want Gran to see.
