Norway among four countries racing to be carbon neutral
Here’s an interesting question – if you’re the world’s third largest exporter of oil, could you ever truly claim to be carbon neutral?
It’s a question that Norway, which comes after only Russia and Saudi Arabia in terms of oil exports, is hoping to answer with a yes, as it aims to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country.
According to the Independent, it’s up against near-neighbour Iceland, far-flung New Zealand and lush Costa Rica, which aims to be neutral by 2021.
Of course, the race is already lost if you believe the Vatican, which claims that it became carbon neutral in 2007 through planting trees in Hungary. Though Vatican City may have among Europe’s safest roads, critics point out that it hasn’t planted the trees in its own tiny 109-acre territory. Perhaps a case of having missed the pontiff?
