Top five blogs to help you save energy
Saving energy is, if you’ll excuse the analogy, not like turning off a light switch. Those of us trying to reduce our carbon emissions (and preferably our household bills too) can take some actions right now, but many of the changes have to be longer-term. They’re going to involve changing the way we do things on a day-to-day basis, and being open to new ideas.
Keeping up with those ideas (and gently reminding ourselves why they matter) is a question of being connected, so we’ve put together the best five sources of inspiration from the blogosphere that we’ve come across since we started Living.
This hasn’t been around many weeks, but it’s already a promising mix of practical advice and commentary on the debate. It’s written by Philip Sellwood, who’s been chief exec of the Energy Saving Trust for the last four years. We reckon he knows a thing or two about saving energy.
Best known in the UK for capering around in cartoons avoiding Inspector Clouseau, the Pink Panther has also been a mascot for a US insulation company since 1980. Roll forward to 2007 and – of course – he’s fighting the good fight for home energy efficiency.
With his pink paw firmly “on the pulse of energy conservation” he answers daily questions about insulation – a lot of them are pretty technical, so the archive answers everything you’ll ever want to know about about lofts and cavity walls.
We think this is great. The RSA is piloting a carbon trading scheme, and you can see how they’re getting on via this smart blog, which includes the ‘carbonDAQ’ index of the price of CO2. Incidentally, it also features the trendiest tag cloud we’ve ever seen.
Energy Saving – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
One of several energy-conscious sites to adopt the dark screen approach of Blackle, this has informative, in-depth content on a huge range of topics, including a particularly useful stream of posts that explains eco-labelling.
A blog for anyone who’s ever dreamed of snipping the power lines and never seeing another electricity bill. With reams of insight and advice from people who’ve gone ‘off-grid’, this is less a DIY blog and more a portal to a whole different lifestyle.
With new green sites springing up every day, there are bound to be some other useful energy-saving blogs out there. We’d be really interested to hear if you know of any.
