Why Living is involved in Blog Action Day — and you should be too
We’ve just signed Living up as a contributing blog for the second annual Blog Action Day which is happening on 15 October. This year, bloggers are being asked to consider the issue of world poverty. (Last year it was the environment).
Here’s how it works. Through the power of the online networks that we’re all a part of – including those of us brought together by this very blog post – and with a focused blogging effort on 15 October, people all over the world will bring attention to the issue. Here’s the promotional video to explain more:
At the time of writing, there are 3,975 blogs registered to take part in this year’s event. I’m really excited that Living is going to be a part of it.
2007’s Blog Action Day was all about the environment and generated 23,327 blog posts on the issue – which were read by nearly 14.5 million people. And did this make a difference? Well, obviously, actions speak louder than words. For me, on a personal level, the best thing to come out of the event was a list of incredibly useful information about how I could make small changes in my own life to contribute to much bigger, global change.
For example on the Dumb Little Man blog, there was post about all the other things you can recycle, above and beyond the obvious stuff that is picked up by the recycling van once a fortnight. It’s the reason I signed up to Freecycle.
On a global level, Blog Action Day in 2007 generated a huge upsurge in the level of discussion about the environment.
And it even got the attention of officials at the EU and UN – who used it as a way to gather views and opinions on sustainability and environmental policy.
So if you are reading this – and you have a view on world poverty – why not join the conversation? If you don’t have a blog already, why not set one up? It’s really simple – and there is plenty of help for beginners. Try this guide to setting up a blog for beginners from Patrick Schaber, for example.
Although if you’re feeling lazy, just come back to Living and find out more about Blog Action Day over the course of the next four weeks. And give us a shout if you have something you’d like us to say on your behalf.
